By good news I hope you mean that the tourism trade may open up now that we don't hold any old grudges.

I hope you don't mean that Fidel was a negative influence on the US. The whole missile crisis was a direct result of the US putting missiles on the Soviet Union's border in Turkey.

I don't think Castro was really a negative influence on the US, other than that he helped fuel anti-Communist paranoia. And yes, I am hopeful that the embargo can be dropped and we can work out a mutually beneficial trade arrangement.

My issue with Castro's government, as it is with any totalitarian Communist regime, is that they are fundamentally built upon every individual agreeing to shut up and do what they're told. Dissent is squashed and anyone who disagrees is exiled, imprisoned, or killed. Freedom of choice in pretty much any way, shape, or form is incongruous with the Communist system.

But in short, yes, I am looking forward to a conciliatory path with post-Fidel Cuba.
